"CSIRO Mathematical and Information Sciences have ported their leading edge SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) Viewer to pocket computing devices - bringing accurate, sharp, clear and colourful renditions of maps and pictures close to hand.
This brings exciting new opportunities for getting visual information into field applications.
Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) is the W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) standard for delivering and presenting graphic and image data on the Internet. SVG images can be interactive, and they offer accurate, clear detail, no matter how much you zoom or rescale. SVG is fast becoming the industry standard for vector graphics.
CSIRO have developed software for Windows CE platforms to view image and vector data conforming to the SVG standard. Initially, this was done for desktop and laptop PCs. Now it is available for a range of pocket-sized computing devices such at Pocket and Handheld PCs.
The applications are innumerable. . . How would you use a high quality picture or graphic, available ‘in your hand’? Some examples:
- detailed maps for navigation
- interactive street directories
- ideal for field schematics
- check architectural drawing details on site"
